Relwen is a best seller at Wittmore season after season. The label is a modern interpretation of a uniform and is easy to understand. Jamie bases his collection off of vintage military pieces. But it's modified and super wearable. His stuff is season-less and everything goes with each other no matter when it was made. It never gets old. The collection fits all types of guys from lean to athletic. Everything's machine washable and easy to go.
We did a quick check-in with Jamie Rupp, Relwen's founder and designer. Jamie is based in Ohio with his family and we wanted to know what makes him tick and what inspires him at this current moment in time.
WHAT ALBUMS ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
Bill Withers' - Greatest Hits. I’m always rekindling with oldies, sometimes not so distant, although it’s always a matter of perspective and experience. This Bill Withers’ disc was a recent gift due to his passing. I think we’re all pretty familiar with his songs, although we likely brushed over the significance, musicality, and poetic economy of his words. “And I know, I know, I know, I know,… ain’t no sunshine when she’s gone.”
TOP 10 ALBUMS TO GET YOU THROUGH UNCERTAIN TIMES?
BOOKS - WHAT ARE YOU READING AND WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?
I’ve been trying to read a recent biography on Enzo Ferrari, but I’ve got very little stamina to stay awake and it’s just a matter of a few pages before I’m into deep sleep. Pretty sure I need to become a 5am reader to find success on this front.
WHAT ARE YOU STREAMING AT THE MOMENT?
Just finished Ozark season 3, love this show. The writing, the performances, the character development. It’s almost shocking the story can connect given the variety of characters, and yet it’s likely precisely why it works. So much fun.
WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU RECENTLY WATCHED OR LIKE TO GO BACK TO AGAIN AND AGAIN?
ANY RECOMMENDATIONS THAT HELP YOU FEEL MORE BALANCED?
Play more family games. We just opened a game that had not been unsealed since receiving this past Christmas— Eye Know. It’s a fun trivia game suitable for teenagers and adults alike. Most importantly, just find things that make you laugh together, which many of these games tend to inspire. (Amazon)
IS THERE AN ARTIST AND MUSEUM THAT INSPIRES YOU?
My favorite museum is the National Portrait Gallery in London. I’m enthralled by the newest forms of portrait art and the many ways of conveying a subject and their story through paint. But, I’m equally enamored with subjects of the past, feel like I’m soaking in history by how an artist depicts their subject (from any era). There’s always something of social relevance and inquiry being stated in the best works.
WHAT DESIGN REFERENCES DO YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN YOUR CORE?
“Form follows function”, and all things related to the Bauhaus movement. I’m really big on utility and not a fan on things “designed”. The less something looks designed, the better, part of the reason so much of what Relwen does borrows from vintage references, particularly from working fields language or styles of iconic military dress. Purpose built is at our core.
FAVORITE RELWEN ITEMS THAT WE HAVE STOCKED AT WITTMORE?
You guys bought some pretty bad shit, Paul, hard to differentiate. ;) But, to go out on a limb, The Flex Field Blazer. It’s just a great around town jacket that serves most occasions, collar up or down, or cuffs rolled, with t-shirt and trunks, light sweatshirt, or even the occasional woven shirt. The more irreverently worn, the better.
The FLEX FIELD BLAZER in Charcoal Grey and Navy Blue for this season.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FOCUS SINCE YOU'VE BEEN WORKING FROM HOME?
Spring ’21 remains a focus, whether doing a style-out of sorts from the dining room table (pic attached) or fabric development that takes place at the mill level, things keep rolling and we all find a way. A bit more skype and zoom than we ever enjoy, but we’re good.
