Kelly Slater Goes into the Outerknown at WITTMORE

Kelly Slater Goes into the Outerknown at WITTMORE

When World Champion surfer Kelly Slater decided to join up with menswear designer guru John Moore, our ears perked up. Then they explained the use of recycled fabrics and having a transparent, Fair Labor supply chain. Then they really had our attention. After seeing a sneak preview of the collection in person, we were sold ... literally. This brand might have been founded by a world famous surfer but the collection inhabits something far beyond that of a "surf brand."

The line oozes casual cool and rises above other cutting edge labels because Outerknown strives to provide the most ethically and responsibly made garments. One example is their partnership with ECONYL who sources recycled fishing nets and other waste in the production process to manufacture premium-grade textiles. They also partnered with Bluesign to eliminate harmful substances from the beginning of the supply chain right up to the finished product.

In today's world, ethical and sustainable apparel manufacturing is a very rare and non-efficiently regulated industry. Brands like Outerknown recognize that clothing manufacturing is a global industry that employs millions of people. That's why they strive to push fashionable and responsibly made clothing a little further into the outerknown. Starting with clothing made with reclaimed fishing net waste was only a natural course from a surfer who lives in the ocean. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimate there are more than 640,000 tons of abandoned fishing nets are currently in our oceans. Ocean conservation is an imperative part of what Outerknown sets out to do and this was only the first step. They plan to eventually make all products with recycled materials in a closed-loop production cycle so nothing is ever wasted.

Wittmore are proud to be one of the first retailers carrying Outerknown. Their brand vision is inspirational and motivational to always be conscious of the impact we leave on our planet.
